Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Goodreads Summary:
Sookie Stackhouse is just a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. Until the vampire of her dreams walks into her life-and one of her coworkers checks out....
Maybe having a vampire for a boyfriend isn't such a bright idea.
My Review:
So, this was my third attempt at reading this book - and I promised myself, I'd finish it this time.
And why so many attempts, you might ask? It's simple.
First, I was a little vampired-out. Twilight. Vampire Diaries. Eh, a little one too many bloodsuckers for me right now.
And second, I'm a HUGE HBO / True Blood fan. I mean, who doesn't love Alexander Skarsgard in his role as Eric? If vampires really did exist and he was one of them? Yeah, I'd pretty much strap his mouth to my neck for the rest of eternity, if I could. Yes, he's that yummy.
Vampire Eric aside, the problem I had was the first book in the series, is almost to the T, exactly the same as the show. Seriously. Except for how Sam looks in the series vs. how he's described in the book, that was about the only thing that wasn't the same (and I'm much happier with how Sam looks on the show, btw).
And while there were several moments that made me LOL in the book - and of course, you get drawn deeper into each character...it lacked a little something for me. Maybe because I already knew how it was going to end - that could definitely be it. Shame on me for watching the show before reading the books.
But by all means, I do intend on reading the the rest of the series...hopefully before another season starts up on TV(which is coming up fast!).
Net/net: Sookie as a character is definitely growing on me. Vampire Bill (her love interest) and Jason (her brother) are well written. And Eric? Yeah, I hear that a few more books in offer up some racy scenes between he and Sookie...and that right there might just be worth the read!
